I am continuing my series on things that help me to find small pockets of space to breathe, and perhaps find a bit of hope and joy. In a world that seems to be particularly challenging at the moment, continuing to find small pieces of joy and hope may be crucial if we are to maintain a sense hope that we can create a better world, rather than get dragged down into despair.

Planting Seeds

Maybe I should create detailed plans of exactly what I want to grow this year and track precisely when to plant each packet of seeds. Unfortunately, for me those sorts of plans tend to fall apart pretty quickly…and then I end up doing nothing. Instead this year, I went to the garden centre with my daughter, we picked a few packets of seeds that she thought looked pretty from the pictures on the packets, I checked that this was round about the right time of year to plant them, and we found some pots/trays and compost. They have already germinated and will hopefully continue growing, at which point I will find some space in the garden for them. Detailed plans have a place, but maybe sometimes it’s better to just get on and plant something without overthinking it!

Book Recommendation

I am enjoying ‘Wonderland’ by Brett Westwood and Stephen Moss. Each day of the year has a short passage about one element of British wildlife. As I write this, today’s entry is about the stoat.

A small space above my desk

This month it’s primulas, daffodils and a pile of threads, ribbons and wool in the green and yellow shades that seem to be everywhere at the moment, in daffodils, primroses, cowslips, dandelions.
